Uterine/Endometrial Cancers –
Endometrial cancers are becoming increasingly common in India due to various lifestyle factors. These cancers typically affect women in their 50s & 60s. Bleeding after menopause is recognized as a dangerous sign by many women and usually leads to a gynecological checkup. Other symptoms are vaginal discharge which may be foul smelling or blood-stained and lower abdominal pain. Clinical examination, ultrasound, and endometrial biopsy help to clinch the diagnosis. The patient is asked to undergo an MRI to look for the extent of the disease locally. Most of these cancers are diagnosed in an early stage and are amenable to surgery. Removal of the uterus, both fallopian tubes, ovaries, and lymph nodes (Sentinel or complete dissection) is the mainstay of treatment. Surgery may be done via open/laparoscopic/robotic route depending on patient and disease factors. Patients may require further treatment in the form of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Patients generally have good outcomes, especially in the early stages.
Do not hide your symptoms, seek help early and become cancer-free!!
