Role of intra operative frozen biopsy in cancer surgery
Role of intra-operative frozen biopsy in cancer surgery –
- Frozen biopsy is the immediate processing of a specimen/tissue removed during surgery to make a rapid diagnosis.
- The specimen is tested by the pathologist to identify any features of cancer while the patient is still under anesthesia in the operation theatre.
- This helps to guide the surgeon on how to proceed.
- If a tumor turns out to be non-cancerous the surgeon stops the procedure. However, in case of a malignant/cancerous tumor, the surgeon completes the surgery. This helps to perform a complete surgery in the same sitting and avoid a second surgery.
- Frozen biopsy is also used to assess the involvement of lymph nodes intraoperatively. If the representative/sentinel lymph node is positive for cancer a complete lymph node dissection is done. However, if the representative lymph node is negative for cancer extensive dissection can be avoided, minimizing the side effects of lymph node dissection.
- The frozen section is also used to check the margin status after resection, especially in critical areas (eg. face).
