Hereditary breast-ovarian cancers –
* 10% of breast and ovarian cancers may be hereditary.
* Common genetic mutations (genetic change) are BRCA1 and BRCA2. These are passed on from generation to generation.
* These mutations lead to defective DNA repair and accumulation of damaged DNA which causes cancers.
* These cancers occur at typically younger ages, may involve B/L breasts and patients may have a family history of cancer.
* Commonly genetic testing is done after diagnosis of one of these cancers.
* If a person is diagnosed with this mutation, there are protective measures against developing cancer -
o Early and frequent screening
o Medicines to prevent development of breast cancer (Tamoxifen)
o Removal of both fallopian tubes & ovary (protection against both ovarian & breast cancer)
o Removal of both breasts (protection against breast cancer)
* Genetic counseling and testing are required for all family members as well.
Be aware, and protect yourself and your family with Genetic testing!!
