A mastectomy is a breast cancer procedure in which the entire breast is removed. The entire breast, including the nipple, areola, skin, and fascia (covering) of the pectoralis major muscle (primary chest muscle), is removed during this treatment. Depending on the circumstances, a sentinel lymph node biopsy may involve removing a few underarm lymph nodes. If a woman is hospitalized, she can typically return home the next day.
