Ovarian Cancer/Tumor/Cyst – Removal of complete tumor and all visible disease leads to best results !!

Ovarian tumors are of various types while cysts occurring in younger women are more likely to be benign (non-cancerous), Ovarian tumors occurring in women aged 50 years or more are likely to be cancerous. These tumors present with vague symptoms such as abdominal (tummy, stomach) distension, decreased appetite, and urinary and intestinal complaints. Different criteria can be used to ascertain the malignant potential of ovarian tumors such as age, size of tumor, and Ca-125 levels in blood. High Ca-125 levels are suggestive of ovarian cancer.

However, the only confirmatory test is pathology. The aim is to remove the complete tumor at the time of surgery. The final pathology report helps to stage the disease. If the cancer appears to be advanced at the initial visit itself chemotherapy may be considered first followed by surgery. Complete cytoreduction (removal of all visible diseases) is the key to good survival outcomes in ovarian cancer patients.
