If melanoma is detected early, it is highly treatable. Wide local excision surgery is the primary treatment for early melanomas; this same procedure may be used as a component of the therapeutic approach for more advanced melanomas. Depending on the depth of the melanoma (or thickness, according to Breslow), the margin of healthy tissue surrounding the aberrant lesion varies. This is finished once the diagnosis has been made. This reduces the likelihood that the cancer will return to its original location. A broad local excision procedure removes the healthy tissue margin surrounding the tumor. We refer to this as the margin. The margin's size is determined by the melanoma's Breslow thickness and, sometimes, its placement on the body.
