Colon (large intestine) cancers are common cancers and rapidly increasing especially in younger adults. These cancers cause bleeding in the intestines or may block it partially or completely. The common symptoms of colon cancer are altered bowel habits (diarrhea-loose stools/constipation), blood in stools, anemia, loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and distension. If anyone aged> 40 years has similar symptoms they should get it checked out. Tests include stool testing, colonoscopy, Ultrasound, or CT scan. The main treatment for intestinal cancers is Surgery which involves the removal of the diseased intestine with good margins and an adequate number of lymph nodes (present in the adjacent fat). Surgery for colon cancer is safe, highly effective, and allows patients to have a good quality of life. Additional chemotherapy may be required as per the stage of the disease.
