Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) means the removal of all macroscopic (visible) diseases from the abdomen. CRS is done for cancers that spread and involve the peritoneum (inner lining of the abdomen) such as cancer of the appendix, colorectal and ovarian cancer. These cancers typically spread to the peritoneum and require specialized surgery – Cytoreductive surgery. This surgery requires the removal of diseased organs – the primary site of cancer, other involved organs, involved peritoneum to remove all visible diseases. Such surgeries are time taking, require specific training and excellent post-operative care.
