Ovarian tumors/cancer in young women – Germ cell tumors of the ovary
- Ovarian cancer may occur in teenage girls and young women, these are typically germ cell tumors that arise in the germ cells (egg) of the ovary.
- They usually present as abdominal fullness/swelling. Most patients have non-specific symptoms.
- Workup includes examination, ultrasound of the abdomen, and blood tests. Tumor markers (AFP, Beta hCG, LDH) are produced by specific germ cell tumors which helps in making a diagnosis and follow-up.
- Open Surgery (laparotomy) with removal of the involved ovary and complete surgical staging of the disease is extremely important.
- Surgery is usually followed by 3-4 cycles of chemotherapy depending on the stage and nature of the disease.
- Do not ignore your symptoms.. seek help for early diagnosis and treatment!!
