In order to prevent recurrence, wide local excision is a surgical technique used to remove the tumor along with a small portion of surrounding tissue. The size of the tumor determines how much of the surrounding tissue is removed. Excision of a large local area is an outpatient treatment. Admission to the hospital is not necessary. You won't experience any pain during the process, but you will often be kept awake. Prior to making the incision, the surgeon cleans the area and applies a local or general anesthetic. The tumor and surrounding tissue are removed by the surgeon once the anaesthesia has taken effect. Either sutures or stitches are used to seal the wound. The surgeon could patch the wound with healthy skin from another place of your body if a significant portion of your skin has been removed. We call this skin grafting. To be examined by a pathologist is the removed tumor.
